Everyone in Leeds was super nice, and Terry, Michelle, and Johnny installed the show beautifully. If you ever visit Leeds you should check out the Thackray Medical Museum- if you've ever wondered what Victorian Leeds smelled like, it's been recreated just for you.

November in Leeds

I'm working hard for my next show in November at The Leeds College of Art in the UK! I'm super excited to visit Leeds and Haworth (the home of the Brontes and land of the MOORS!) and then travel through Scotland, Bristol (home of my forever friends at the Here Gallery!), Bath, and then end up in a strange old house on the Cornish Coast for Thanksgiving and a drawing retreat with my nearest and dearest. YES!

I didn't know what painting they were picking or what poet they were matching it with until this afternoon, so it's way weird that I had nightmares of zombie attacks all last night, and then woke up to find my painting paired with a series of poems about a zombie apocalypse...

Anderson Ranch Auction

I'm donating this piece that I made at the ranch last summer to the Anderson Ranch Annual Art Auction! The Anderson Ranch is an amazing place- I've been there twice so far and both times it's been a super intense high altitude vision quest full of sleepless nights and amazing meals. As soon as you get there they encourage you to do something totally different than you normally would- to make mistakes and messes and be frustrated, but also to make unexpected breakthroughs and new friends. This painting is the result of plein air painting in a thunderstorm begun with the good omen of a family of weasels greeting us and ended with hiding inside the very building I was painting. I can't say enough good things about the ranch- it's always there when I need to reset the obvious and never fails to make me excited about art all over again. Here's the info:

Afterward I ate wonderful french food with wonderful people and then headed to Encore Karaoke to celebrate my 31st birthday with my nearest and dearest where I got do my Axl Rose impression and unveil me and Amanda's crazy good duet of The Chain. There was some serious karaoke- Amanda's Stevie Nicks is insane, Becca and Teppei's A Whole New World brought a tear to my eye, and Ao's R. Kelly should be illegal. Best Night Ever.

Drawing from literature, film, fashion photography and historical events, MARCI WASHINGTON builds a disjointed fictional narrative with connections to the past as well as to the present. Her new body of work jumps forward in time to a place made up of equal parts 1930s, 1980s and the present in order to investigate what changes and what stays the same. The title of the show For Forever I’ll be Here (a quote from a song by Fever Ray) refers to the constant inhabitant of the story – living in the walls of the house and the hearts of the characters – something that lives through time and forever influences our attempts to make the world a better place.

Washington grew up in the Bay Area and received her BFA and MFA from the California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA. She has been the recipient of awards from both the Anderson Ranch Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation. Her work has been featured in the film Jennifer’s Body (2009) and she is regularly featured in publications such as Juxtapoz Magazine and New American Paintings. This exhibit will be Washington’s second solo show with the Rena Bransten Gallery

Momentum Opening

The opening for Momentum at Le Basse Projects in Chinatown was pretty great. Old friends and new faces, and then karaoke at this place in Japantown called Cosmos, which has a lot of rules but also has Japanese Scotch- one of my favorite things. I forgot to take pictures, but Beau and Christine at the gallery luckily took a bunch- you can see them all here.

Lackluster Life

Ao from Lackluster Life came over and hung out with me while I painted- you can read the resulting funny interview here. Maybe you've heard me talk about this before, but there is one ghost painting that I made that has been surrounded with weirdness from the beginning, starting with the super confrontational gaze that emerged on its own from the wet dripping watercolor. It has a pretty intense energy and took a really long time to make (because it's GIANT). See for yourself:

I was listening to a lot of Mysterious Universe while getting ready for my next show, and there's an episode where they discuss Tulpas- this idea in Tibetan mysticism where you bring to life an energy or presence through intense concentration. It got me thinking about how long the painting took me, and how the eye just emerged staring right at me, and how intense painting it was- it's the only painting that has seriously given me nightmares. In my dreams the figure would corner me and I would be fighting it as it tried to envelop me completely. It got so intense that I starting keeping it rolled up while I was working on it, only unrolling the part of the pattern I was painting. When it was finally done, I really just wanted it away from me- not because it felt evil, just intense and heavy and weirdly insistent. So anyway, I told Ao about all of this and he thought it would be fun to live with it for a few months and see what happened. He's giving me updates and so far it's totally creepy! Hangers rattling in his closet, phantom noises of things falling, his dog freaking out, and his roommates having weird dreams. Photos are turning out strange too:

Bitches Brew

I'm super proud to be part of Parklife's first show of 2011! Bitches Brew is Me, Kelly Tunstall, Aiyana Udesen, Hellen Jo and Rebecca Ebeling- an all lady show in response to the pretty awesomely epic and brave all dude show 'Bro Palace' that happened last year. The opening is Friday January 14th and there will be a performance by WAX IDOLS! I'm excited and you should be too- be there or be square. In other news, there is something real exciting happening Tuesday the 11th, and it's initials are T.S!! My six facebook fans will obviously be the first to know. HA!

New Things!

New work! Yep, yep, I've been working hard on a new series of paintings that are finally starting to come together. For a while everything looked crazy and weird and I had no idea what I was doing, and then as if by magic it all started to make sense! So I've made a new website as well. If you are here then you are probably already enjoying it- hooray! All of the new work is for my solo show at Rena Bransten Gallery in April next year. After that, I'll be showing at The Leeds College of Art next November. Other big news coming soon, but for now I'm full of SECRETS.
